George was a brother of Lord Gerry Fitt, an M.P. from Northern Ireland and Lord Fitt was later to become an honorary member of the regiment's sergeants' mess. Lord Fitt and another of his brothers served as merchant seamen during the Second World War.

“Gerry Fitt served on the Tanker NACELLA official number 168444 built in 1943 for Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co Ltd, London. It was broken up in Bo’ness on 7.3.1960. The ship was completed in June 1943 and by apparently went straight out on a Russian convoy.
The cargo ship THEEMS official number 149764 built in 1921 as ALEKSANDER for A.M. Luther.
1926 renamed JOLLY BRUCE (L.Walford); 1931 renamed THEEMS (L. Walford); 1951 renamed MARVIA (Mazzone & Co). An onboard fire occurred at Marseilles on 21.12.1954 and she was broken up at Spezia on 8.12.1955.”
