Historical Information: The burials in the cemetery, apart from a few dating from November 1944, are almost all from the months of January and February 1945. The men buried here belong mostly to the Scottish regiments of the 52nd (Lowland) Division, engaged in the battle in this vicinity from 18th to 24th January 1945, which had as its object the clearing of a salient west of the River Roer which was still held by the Germans. There are now over 230 1939-1945 War casualties commemorated in this site.

Son of Catherine Grogan, of West Town, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.

“Guardsman Grogan, aged 19, was very popular. He was educated at St. Paulinus’ Roman Catholic School, Westtown, attended St. Paulinus Church, and was a member of the C.Y.M.S. He joined the Army two years ago, and was on the Continent six weeks. He previously worked for Dewsbury Corporation.


As was stated in the local press, Dewsbury District News, 25th November 1944, page 5:

“Maurice Grogan, the son of Patrick and Catherine Grogan, of 12, Manor Road, Westtown, Dewsbury, died of wounds received in action in Holland on 15th November 1944. He served from 1943 until his death with the Irish Guards. [P. Bennett]
